How to Watch WJYL-TV 45 analog and WJYL-DTV 16 WJYL-TV 45 has a powerful signal that covers much of the Kentuckiana area.
The strong signal reaches easily from 32 miles in a circle from Floyds Knobs, Indiana (Tower farm).
Email this page to a friend or loved one.
As of March 2009, WJYL 45 is not on cable.
So for now you will have to tune to the over-the-air channel 45 or DTV Channe 16.
You will need at least a simple indoor antenna.
And you will have to change your TV menus to receive the free over-the-air channels.
What kind of antenna will I need?
Any area which is within 16 to 18 miles can potentialy use a simple set top UHF antenna to receive WJYL 45.
The red and blue areas also get good signal but may require better or outdoor antennas.
You can check to see if you can receive channel 35 on a small portable TV that has a built in antenna.
Or Radio Shack will let you try their set top antennas at home and then return them if they don't work for you.
If you can't get the station with a portable TV or if a set top antenna doesn't work for you, go to http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx to find out what antenna you might need and which direction to point it.
That web site will give you a map of your neighborhood and show all the free TV stations that can be received at your house.
How to change your TV to receive free over-the-air stations
Cable channel 45 is not the same frequency as over-the-air (UHF) channel 45.
But all TV's can be programmed to tune to the desired frequency band.
In the setup menus of your TV there is a place where you can choose whether the TV will tune CATV/Cable frequencies or Off-air/Antenna frequencies Older TV's, without menus, may have a mechanical switch to do this instead.
If you have a cable converter box your TV can be left permanently in the Antenna mode without hurting cable reception.
If you use a Cable Ready TV instead of a converter box, you will have to change this setting back to CATV/Cable when you want to watch cable.
Note: If you don't have Cable, your TV must be set to Off-air/Antenna frequencies or your channel display will give the wrong channel numbers.
The last thing you have to do is connect the antenna.
You could just remove the cable connector from your TV and put on the connector from the antenna.
Or more conveniently, you can get what is called an "A/B Switch" from Radio Shack that will switch the cables for you by just pushing a button.
When you want to watch cable, switch to the cable line.
When you want to watch WJYL 45, switch to the antenna line.
Let your cable company know you want them to carry WJYL 45 or DTV 16.
Your cable company wants to carry the programming their subscribers want.
You just have to show them what that is.
Letters are a very good way, probably better that a phone call, (unless you can get to talk directly with the decsion maker).
With competition from satellite companies, regular cable companies need to be carrying local stations like WJYL 45, so that cable will have something satellite can not offer.
